Artificial intelligence (AI) programs have recently been shown to be more accurate than human experts in diagnosing diseases such as diabetic retinopathy. Real-world experiences with autonomous AI, however, have been discouraging due to high false positive rates, the inability to accommodate real-world data from diverse patients, and limited diagnostic output (often just a yes or no for a specific disease).
