The adoption of artificial intelligence systems and tools (AI) is rapidly advancing in healthcare, offering new ways to enhance clinical decision-making, improve diagnostics, and optimize healthcare operations. However, AI systems are complex and often misunderstood. The regulatory environment increases the complexity—particularly in California where new laws were passed governing the use of AI systems by healthcare providers and health insurers last year and many new bills are under consideration right now! We will have our AI Policy Corner updates posted soon.
This introductory blog kicks off a series designed to break down AI in clear, practical terms—from understanding AI methods and systems to exploring its functional capabilities, levels of autonomy, applications in healthcare, varied deployment challenges, and the importance of local validation by healthcare providers.
Each blog in this series will build on the previous one, equipping clinicians, policymakers, researchers, and healthcare leaders with the foundational knowledge to engage in AI discussions and make informed decisions about its use.
