The Health Care AI Blog: What to Expect in this Series

 Authored by: Sylvia Trujillo

The adoption of artificial intelligence systems and tools (AI) is rapidly advancing in healthcare, offering new ways to enhance clinical decision-making, improve diagnostics, and optimize healthcare operations. However, AI systems are complex and often misunderstood. The regulatory environment increases the complexity—particularly in California where new laws were passed governing the use of AI systems by healthcare providers and health insurers last year and many new bills are under consideration right now!  We will have our AI Policy Corner updates posted soon.

This introductory blog kicks off a series designed to break down AI in clear, practical terms—from understanding AI methods and systems to exploring its functional capabilities, levels of autonomy, applications in healthcare, varied deployment challenges, and the importance of local validation by healthcare providers.

Each blog in this series will build on the previous one, equipping clinicians, policymakers, researchers, and healthcare leaders with the foundational knowledge to engage in AI discussions and make informed decisions about its use.

📌 Join us on this journey! Each post will explore a critical piece of the AI puzzle, helping you navigate its opportunities, risks, and real-world impact.

1. What is AI? The Methods, Systems, and Functionality.

  • The methods of AI
  • The systems of AI
  • AI Functionality

2. Understanding AI’s Levels of Autonomy

  • How do you define assistive, augmentative and autonomous
  • The role of human oversight (“human-in-the-loop,” “on-the-loop,” “out-of-the-loop”)

3. AI in Healthcare: Applications & Why They Matter

  • How AI is applied in research, operations, public health, population health,
patient engagement and clinical care (clinical decision support, diagnostic, therapeutic)
  • Where AI is proving most valuable—and where its limitations lie

4. Deployment Challenges: Sensitivity, Specificity & Transferability

  • Why AI trained in one setting often fails in another
  • How differences in patient demographics, workflows, and data quality affect AI performance
  • The critical need for real-world testing before scaling AI

5. Bias in AI: How It Begins & How It Spreads

  • How bias is introduced during ideation, data selection, training, validation, and deployment
  • A use case comparing AI built for an urban hospital vs. a rural hospital
  • How bias impacts real-world patient care

6. The Role of Local Validation & Community Involvement in AI

  • Why AI models must be tested with range of healthcare providers before deployment
  • The role of rural and under-invested communities in shaping AI development
  • The importance of collaboration between healthcare organizations, AI developers, and local stakeholders
